Daily Alcohol Intake Can Lead To Binge Drinking

Sipping wine, beer or spirits three to four times per week increases the risk of binge drinking, particularly among young men, according to a new study. Researchers analyzed the drinking habits of Canadians and found that frequent alcohol consumption can lead to binge drinking among all gender and all age groups.

Knock-Out Drugs: Narrow Window For Detection

Drug-facilitated sexual crimes are increasing. Germany’s Bonn Institute for Forensic Medicine has recorded that the number of examinations on the use of intoxicants in sexual offences within their catchment area increased 10-fold between 1997 and 2006. In a new study, researchers present the modes of action and the detection windows for the most frequent substances.

4 Ways You Can Help an Alcoholic or Drug Addict

Maintaining a friendship with someone who abuses drugs or alcohol can be extremely taxing.  While you may want to help the person, he or she may not want your help because they may be in denial that they even have a problem to begin with.  That being said, don’t get down on yourself; there are several ways that you can still help an alcoholic or drug addict get the help that they need.

5 Ways to Help an Alcoholic or Drug Addict

  1. Have an Intervention- When most people think of drug or alcohol interventions, they get a negative picture in their heads of someone being ganged up on by family and friends.  However, this is not the purpose nor does it have to be the intention of a drug intervention.  If done with love and respect without confrontation and judgment it can prove to be a powerful and successful method for getting help  for people who need it.
  2. Talk To Them 1 on 1- If you’re not entirely comfortable with doing an intervention, sometimes it makes more sense to try to talk to the drug/alcohol addict on a personal level about their struggles.  Sometimes people who are struggling are afraid or ashamed to ask for help.  In these instances, it can therefore be a relief to some to have a close friend confront them in a non threatening way about what is going on so that the proper help can be sought out on their behalf.
  3. Set Boundaries- Drug addiction and/or alcohol abuse doesn’t just affect the drug addict; it affects everyone around them.  For this reason, you may have to be honest with your friend or family member who is abusing drugs/alcohol.  Letting someone know that you don’t want to be around them when they are drunk or high is not a form of abandonment.  Rather, it is a wake up call for most to let them know that their addiction is negatively impacting others.  Remember that you cannot take care of someone else if you are allowing your own life to be consumed by something that is out of your control.
  4. Be Selfish- If you have struggled with drug addiction issues in the past, and you are now dealing with someone else who is struggling with drug addiction issues, do yourself a favor and help yourself first.  This is especially true if the other person’s behaviour is leading you to use again.  Go to AA meetings or enroll yourself in a drug and alcohol rehab program.  Remember that you are going to be of little help to others if you can’t first take care of your own needs.

Why Alcoholism

There are currently 18.5 million Americans that exhibit signs of alcoholism or dependence upon alcohol and alcohol related problems affect one in three families. This begs the question: Why is alcohol America’s drug of choice?

A recent study indicated that Americans are turning to alcohol to escape the stress they feel in their daily lives. There are bills to be paid, deadlines to meet and the growing economic crisis is putting added pressure on men and women as they see their retirement savings shrink and are threatened by layoffs around every turn. The vast majority of alcohol users are able to keep their drinking in check but for a small group, their drinking spirals out of control. For these men and women the pain they were trying to escape becomes exponentially worse as their addiction develops.

Alcohol addiction has also been linked to family history and some believe certain individuals have a genetic predisposition to have addiction issues. A person is considered an alcoholic when their drinking becomes unmanageable and/or it starts to interfere with their family, personal, professional or social life. If a person can’t control how much they drink, when they will stop or what the outcome of their drinking will be, it is time for them to reach out and seek help.

Alcoholism is a disease and as such it can be treated. Using a proactive approach to educating the public on the early signs of problematic drinking is a vital component of saving precious lives. Alcohol is a drug. It can be abused and it can take over one’s life in the blink of an eye. If you feel you have a drinking problem, there are many avenues and resources for support. If someone else’s addiction is affecting you, there are support groups for you as well. Know that you don’t have to fight the battle alone, and know that you can win!

Mother & Daughter Jailed for Providing Alcohol to Minors

Just when you think that people have learned their lesson with alcohol and alcohol abuse, it seems that they never fail to disappoint.  According to a recent news story, a 46 year-old mother and her 16 year-old daughter were charged for providing alcohol at a party which sent two minors to the hospital.  According to the news report, when deputies arrived at the mother’s home located in Sparta, NY they found a 14 year-old girl passed out.  When the girl was brought to the hospital, authorities were astonished to find that her blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit for driving. Additionally, another girl was hospitalized due to alcohol.

Karen McCarty, the mother who is being charged in this case, was said to have purchased two bottles of vodka, peppermint schnapps and hard lemonade that over a half dozen teenagers consumed at the graduation party being held.  McCarty’s daughter, Morgan, was also charged because according to authorities, “purchasing the alcohol was her idea”.

The McCartys now face nine counts of unlawfully dealing with a child.  According to Livingston County Sheriff York:

We are going to send a clear message that we are not going to tolerate this.  We never did, and we’re not going to now.
